Ellen grew up in a small town in Ohio as the youngest of four children. As a young child, she loved learning about caring for people and animals, and had some amazing teachers in her early life. After undergraduate college nearby at Bowling Green State University, Ellen moved to Michigan where she spent a year working in a youth correctional facility. This challenging year put Ellen’s goals of a master’s degree in high gear. The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA was Ellen’s next stop, where she earned her Master’s and Specialist’s degrees in School Psychology. She spent the next fourteen years working as a School Psychologist in Hawaii, Maryland, and several school districts in Texas.

After working in public education, another career shift emerged, and Ellen took real estate classes and began working as a Realtor. After several years of juggling both jobs, a full time shift to real estate was made in 2021. Ellen has helped hundreds of families in the Austin area find a new home, and loves helping buyers, sellers, and tenants make their move. She recently got her Broker’s license and opened a brokerage, Steele Portfolio Real Estate, and manages a team of agents. Working in real estate has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences, but Ellen loves every moment.

Ellen is the proud mother of three boys and stepmother to two more children. Her husband, Pete, is a local business owner and supporter of the Standish Foundation mission as well. The family enjoys spending time in Scouting activities, and Ellen’s oldest son recently earned his Eagle Scout designation. Two more of the boys are working towards this accomplishment, as well. Between flute lessons, football, tae kwon do, volleyball, and basketball, everyone stays very busy! They have two dogs (Chewbacca and Lucky) and two miniature horses (Button and Stormy). They love going to movies, taking trips out of town, going to concerts, visiting grandparents, and spending time together.

The Standish Foundation holds a position of importance to Ellen because when her oldest spent time in the hospital as a baby, she saw firsthand the importance of child life specialists and play in the hospital setting. Ellen strongly believes in the principles that children should be treated with age-appropriate respect and dignity in the medical setting, and this contributes to lifelong positive healthcare.
